Asbury is not just a family congregation within the walls of our church, we also extend our loving hand to the community in as many different ways a possible. Here is a list of some of the ways that Asbury reaches out and touches the community.
- Pastoral Care—Our clergy makes regular visits to people in the hospital as well as those who are housebound. The success of this ministry depends on our members to inform us of those who are sick, which they do with such vigor. When a church member or loved one of a church member passes, our clergy will make immediate contact with the family for prayer and offer any assistance possible.
- Intercessory Prayer Ministry—A confidential ministry in which our clergy prays daily for those who are in need ranging from health issues to personal problems
- Visitation and Care Call—Members of our church go out into the community to check on persons that are in the hospital and home bound and care for them so that the people can still remain connected to Asbury.
Asbury is active in mission projects throughout the year but there are two projects that we are involved in on a regular basis. One is with the Urban Ministries Center in downtown Charlotte. Urban Ministries open their doors each day for a hot lunch meal and we have folks volunteer one day a week to help prepare and serve these homeless “neighbors”. We also have a team of people who help serve lunch at Angels and Sparrows soup kitchen in Huntersville on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. You are invited and encouraged to volunteer in either place if you have the time to do so.
Asbury Deli—Operation Sandwich
We meet at Asbury United Methodist Church on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 am in the fellowship hall to make 500 sandwiches. Volunteers pack the sandwiches and deliver them immediately to the Urban Ministry Center. If you would like to volunteer, come out on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00am.
The third Friday evening of each month beginning in December and ending in March, we host 12 of our homeless neighbors overnight here at Asbury United Methodist Church. The neighbors are picked up by bus at Urban Ministries Center and taken to Asbury where a hot dinner has been prepared just for them by a group of volunteers. They have a room prepared with nice mattresses, blankets, and a pillow. They are given a towel and washcloth and they can take a shower in our Asbury shower before they go to bed. The chapel is open for them to use if they desire and the pastors are here for them as well. On Saturday morning, they are cooked a delicious hot breakfast at the Asbury Café. Afterwards each neighbor is given a bag lunch to take with them. Volunteers have filled each lunch bag with items that you have donated.
In November 2013, we began a food pantry at Asbury that is available to anyone who needs food. There are no requirements to be met or forms to fill out. The pantry is open each Sunday after church from 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm. Appointments are available during the week by calling the church office at 704-875-2486. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.
Our clothing closet ministry carries quality, gently used clothing in all sizes for men, women and children. All clothing is free and the closet is open each Sunday after church from 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm. Appointments are available during the week by emailing Allie at HeavensHangersaumc@gmail.com. Donations are always welcome.
Asbury Cafe and Meeting Place
The Asbury Cafe and Meeting Place began here at Asbury United Methodist Church in the fall of 2006. The mission goal was to provide food and fellowship for not only the members of Asbury but the community as well. The Cafe is open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. The hours of operation are 7:00 am until 10:00 am. You will find a menu that consists of country ham, sausage, bacon, liver mush, eggs (prepared as you order), grits, gravy, pancakes, danish, fruit cups, biscuits, just about any breakfast item you would like. An all-you-can-eat menu is available for $6 or you can order a-la carte as well. (Menu items are subject to availability and are subject to change.)
Asbury United Methodist Church has been called to be the hands and feet of Christ and as you have read, we are answering His call. If you have read this and find a place you would see yourself volunteering, please use the Contact Us page.
